Himalayan Sherpa House

Sherpa refers to Nepal's most recognizable ethnic population that inhabitants the Solu-Khumbu region-the southern gateway to Mount Everest. Around five centuries ago the Sherpa ancestors migrated from Tibet over the 5,900m (19,1000 ft) Nangpa La pass. Once settled, they lived as farmers, yak herders, and traders, often bringing goods south, to trade with Tibet. During this time they become known for being friendly, honest, hardworking and reliable people. Devout Buddhists, the Sherpa people hold a tremendous respect for the mountains that surround their homeland, considering them home to the gods and goddesses. Sherpas and Tibetans refer to Mt. Everest as "Chomolangma" which translates to "The Goddess Mother". Fortunately, the Sherpas no longer believe it blasphemous to consider climbing these sacred mountains, and have instead built a reputation as expert mountaineers. English mountain climber George Mallory and other climber elites quickly appreciated the dedication, honesty, and expertise of the Sherpa people-decades before Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and British climber Edmund Hillary famously scaled Mt. Everest in 1953. These early expeditions marked the beginning of the Sherpa's legacy as gatekeepers of the Himalayas. Ancestral roles of farming and trading would remain but guiding climbs and treks would become a mainstay of the Sherpa economy and lifestyle.
